The Supermarine Spitfire was one of the best known fighter aircraft in World War II. Attributed with the successful defense against the attacking German airplanes during the Battle of Britain, the Spitfire and the pilots who flew them tipped the scale of airpower in Europe. The Spitfire was infinitely more maneuverable than the Messerschmitt's that they engaged. The steely British pilots made the difference.
