In 1937. the USAF required a new high performance fighter that had a faster maximum speed, higher rate of climb, and range. What the USAF got was the P-38 Lightning. It's most notable for its work over the Pacific during WWII, and "Ace of Aces" Major Richard I. Bong won 40 victories with this aircraft. The P-38 flew on two 1,475-hp engines with a max speed of 414 mph. four 12.7-mm machine guns, one 20-mm cannon, and 3,200 Ibs. of bombs were carried.
