PBYs were a long range maritime patrol bomber (amphibian flying boat). The US Navy first used the 5-series Catalina in 1939. During WWII, 21 squadrons used this aircraft. Besides the US Navy and Air Force, the RAF, Canadian, New Zealand and Australian governments bought PBY�s from Boeing. These planes were equipped with four-five machine guns and 4,000 lbs. of bombs or depth charges.
