This jet established Messerschmitt's place in aviation history as the world's first turbojet fighter to enter combat. In 1938-1942 the new gas turbine engines developed by BMW saw service in the Me 262s. German leaders wanted this jet to serve as a bomber as well as a fighter and held production up on this plane. Top speed for the Me 262 was 540 mph and it had a range of 652 miles. Four 30mm MK 108 cannons were to be found in the nose area.
