The 31 squadron was established on October 1 of 1951 at Beauvechain. The same year it moved to Chièvres to form the 10 Wing. The squadron flew some 151 missions on the Spitfire XIV. The last flight on this aircraft took place on 7 July 1952. From this time there were no more aircraft assigned to the squadron and the pilots were divided between No 23 & No 27 Squadron. On March 9 of 1964 the pilots began their conversion to F-104G "Star fighter" which was with great success. 31 Tiger pilot "Alerts François" flew The Last Star fighter (FX-99) to Storage at Coxyde on September 26 of 1983. By this time the Belgian Air Force was fully operational on the F-16 "Fighting Falcon".

The General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon was conceived from a USAF requirement for a new lightweight, low-cost air superiority fighter. The first production F-16A made its maiden flight on the 7th August 1979. Although designed primarily as an air superiority fighter, during the evaluation program the F-16 proved it had the makings of an excellent air-to-ground warplane. The first operational unit was 'combat ready' in October 1980 which was the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing (TFW) at Hill AFB in Utah. General Dynamics sold their company's aircraft production facilities to Lockheed Martin in 1996 and the Lockheed Martin F-16 now serves with over 18 countries around the world.

Designed as a lightweight fighter, it evolved into a successful multi role aircraft. The Falcon's versatility is a paramount reason it was a success on the export market, serving 24 countries. The F-16 is the largest Western fighter program with over 4,000 aircraft built since production started in 1976. Though no longer produced for the United States Air Force, it is still produced for export. The Fighting Falcon is a superb dogfighter with innovations including a frameless, bubble canopy for better visibility, side-mounted control stick to ease control while under high g-forces, and reclined seat to reduce the effect of g-forces on the pilot. It was also the first fighter aircraft to be deliberately built to sustain 9g turns. It is also one of the few jets with a thrust-to-weight ratio greater than one, giving the Falcon excellent acceleration.
