The 3-ton cargo truck became the back bone of German military transports. By simply changing the body these trucks became cargo and troops transports, fire engines, fuel tenders, buses and ambulances. Set up in the ambulance configuration they meant the difference between life and death to thousands of wounded soldiers on the battlefield. They were a mobile hospital loaded with medical supplies and medical personnel. The ambulance was a part of war in every theater of operation from Europe to North Africa to Russia.
The 30th Infantry Division was formed on October 1, 1936. The 30th Infantry fought on the Eastern Front with Army Group North from 1941 until the end of the war. The division fought in the Battle of Dvinsk and was encircled at Demyansk for more than one year. This was a bloody battle and stretched the Sanitätsabteilung (medical detachment) to the limit trying to transport the wounded to field hospitals. The division finally surrendered in the Courland Pocket on May 8, 1945.
